Michael Reed Gach, Ph.D. – Life Experience & Work

“Acupressure has been a great blessing.
Healing work is my life’s purpose –
A way of serving others.”

Michael Reed Gach, Ph.D.

I received a B.A. degree from Immaculate Heart College in Social Relations in 1975. My advanced acupressure training from Ron and Iona Teeguarden, Traditional Chinese Medicine from Frank Chung, and training in Zen Shiatsu from Japanese Zen Priest Reuho Yamada occurred in the period of 1972-1982. I received my Ph.D. from Columbia Pacific University in Acupressure Therapy through Health & Human Services in 1993.

In 1976, I started the Acupressure Workshop in Berkeley. Several years later, I changed the name to the Acupressure Institute, which grew to be one of the leading Acupressure training schools internationally. I directed the Acupressure Institute for over 30 years. Few could understand why I loved working so hard, day and night. Over 100,000 people from all over the world come to study Acupressure at my school. During these years, the school and its reputation grew, along with the acceptance of Complementary Medicine and the popularity of Yoga and Massage Therapy. When I sold the school in 2008, the Acupressure Institute had over 40 instructors. I carefully choose my friend and colleague, Joseph Carter, L.Ac., to take the reins of the school.

In 1979, I had the opportunity to be published by Warner Books in New York. Warner was looking for a non-invasive approach to pain relief. Arthritis Relief at your Fingertips received a national six-city media tour.

I have written seven books, several self-healing CDs, and DVDs. Since I barely got passing grades in English throughout grade school, writing did not come easy. I had great fear in learning how to read which caused my dyslexia. Without my drive and excitement to make Acupressure more accessible as a healing art for humanity, these works would never have been published. My books, CDs and DVDs have sold over a half million copies, bringing hands-on healing to thousands.

I originated Acu-Yoga, a self-healing system of exercises that integrates the knowledge of Acupressure and Yoga. Acu-Yoga was my first book, published by Japan Publications and distributed by Harper & Row.  After over 26 printings, the book became a classic, translated into six other languages.

I am the author of the best selling book Acupressure’s Potent Points (Bantam Books), Acu-Yoga, The Bum Back Book, Greater Energy, Arthritis Relief, Acupressure for Lovers, and Acupressure for Emotional Healing (Bantam Books). I have also appeared on hundreds of radio and television shows.

I am currently living in Maui, married and have a wonderful daughter. My aim in life is to produce hundreds of more thought provoking articles, video clips and self-healing programs to make Acupressure accessible to millions more.
