Zen Shiatsu & Thai Massage Trainings

Zen Shiatsu uses all parts of the hand, elbow, thumbs, knuckles, and knees to apply pressure. A skilled practitioner leans body weight into the client with grace and ease. Zen Shiatsu incorporates full body stretches, making it complimentary to Thai Massage. Zen Shiatsu developed by Shizuto Masunaga, created his own extension of the meridians, the theory of Kyo-Jitsu, and abdominal assessment. This form of Shiatsu is taught by Michael Reed Gach and Kathy Kapps at the Acupressure Institute, in Berkeley CA.

Shiatsu, meaning finger (Shi) pressure (Atsu), is a Japanese style, approved by the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare. Shiatsu techniques use deep, rhythmic pressure on all areas of the body, pressing firmly and releasing gradually for intervals of three to ten seconds. Acupressure is point oriented, whereas Shiatsu is a deep muscular bodywork technique. There are many different ways of applying Shiatsu that form different Shiatsu styles. Some styles use mainly the thumbs; some use the forearm, elbow, knee, and even the feet to work to apply deep pressure to the body.

Acupressure Institute in Berkeley, CA offers one of the most comprehensive Asian Bodywork training programs – including assessment skills, an east/west integration of mind/body knowledge and excellent instruction in ten different bodywork styles. These trainings carry a profound reputation internationally and build greater confidence in private practice. The class schedule allows out-of-town students to attend classes intensively and daytime working students to schedule on weekends or evenings.
